Peter Ellsworth Garipay passed away at his home in Melrose, after a lengthy illness, on October 16, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was 71 years of age. Peter was born in Lynn and grew up on the Kiley Farm in Melrose. He graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1958, Merrimack College, Class of 1963 and received his Masters in Secondary School Administration from Salem State College in 1970. A lifelong resident of Melrose, Mr. Garipay started teaching math at the Coolidge School in Melrose in 1965. He was assistant principal of Melrose Middle School from 1972-1992 and then assistant principal at Melrose High School from 1993 until his retirement in 2002. Peter also worked part time for the MJ Connolly & Sons Company for over 25 years. He was a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Past President of Melrose Association of School Administration, member of Massachusetts Teachers' Association, past president and board member of the Melrose YMCA and served on the Wyoming Cemetery Commission for over 20 years. Mr. Garipay has been a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose; he was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society for over 30 years and was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 635 at Incarnation Church. He enjoyed golfing, gardening and was a big Notre Dame Football Fan. Peter loved spending time with his family at Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, NH, traveling with his wife Maurine and was completely dedicated to his three grandchildren. Mr. Garipay was the loving husband of 44 years to Maurine E. (Connolly) Garipay. Devoted father of Michael Garipay of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Chicago, Mark Garipay & his wife Andrea of Melrose and John Garipay & his wife Jill of Stoneham. Cherished grandfather of Nicholas Boulay, Sydney Garipay & Tyler Garipay. Beloved brother of Carol Carilli & her husband Joseph of Wolfeboro, NH, Paul Garipay & his wife Patricia of Aurora, CO and Janet Urquhart of Tewksbury. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, family members and friends. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Monday, October 22, 2012 at 9:00AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Sunday from 2:00-7:00PM.
