Obituary

Philip P. Cargill passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on June 21, 2007; he was 86 years of age. Phil was born and raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1940. Mr. Cargill graduated from Boston University and received his masters from BU. He served as a US Navy Pilot from 1942-1943 and after an explosion grounded him; he joined & served in the US Army during WWII from 1944 to 1946. Phil was a lifelong resident of Melrose and was one of the 1st inductees to the Melrose High School Sports Hall of Fame for lettering in football, hockey, baseball & track. Mr. Cargill worked as a teacher for 32 years for the Malden Public Schools. He taught at the Malden Junior High School, Malden Grammar Schools, taught special needs and drivers education for many years. Phil summered in Jefferson, NH for over 40 years and wintered in Lakeland Florida for 20 years: where he taught ice skating, volunteered at the local hospital and played in the mens softball league. Mr. Cargill was a devoted grandfather with a great sense of humor, a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, Knights of Columbus in Melrose, Incarnation Church and was an avid golfer with the Senior Golf Group at Mt. Hood Golf Course in Melrose. He was the beloved husband of Mary L. (Conroy) Cargill. Devoted father of Peter F. & his wife Mary of Melrose, Philip J. & his wife Karyl of Melrose, Paul J. & his wife Elaine of NH, Gerard X of Melrose, Mary C. Estabrooks of VT, Ann L. Grossheim & her husband Ed of Stoneham, Regina M. Wells & her husband Graham of Dracut and Elizabeth A. Iriana & her husband Nathan of N. Reading. Loving grandfather of 20 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Also survived by numerous nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday, June 25th at 9AM. Funeral Mass in The Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday 2-6PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery Melrose.
