Phyllis T. (Cunningham) Aylward died suddenly at Massachusetts General Hospital on Thursday October 2nd at the age of 74. Phyllis was born and raised in Everett, graduated from Immaculate Conception Grammar School in Everett and Girls Catholic High School in Malden, Class of 1946. She was a homemaker, a resident of Melrose since 1954 and in her early years worked as a secretary for the New England Telephone Company. Phyllis was the CCD coordinator for The Church of the Incarnation in Melrose for many years, volunteered at St. Mary's Church & the Melrose YMCA Swimming with the Handicap program. Phyllis was an Eucharistic Minister at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, she loved gardening, painting, caning chairs and refinishing antiques. Phyllis was the beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Aylward. Devoted mother of Stephen P. Aylward of Peabody, Mary S. Keohan of NH, Barbara A. Nickerson of VA, Peter M. Aylward of VA, Joanne M. Aylward of Centerville, Jeanne T. Aylward of Melrose, Paul T. Aylward of Franklin, Michael T. Aylward of Watertown, Christina M. Tiernan of CO, Philip T. Aylward of Hyannis and late Patricia A. Aylward. Sister of Jeanne Gordy of Centerville. Sister-in-law of Minos Gordy, Ed Wall, Marion Aylward, Rita & Norman Brennan and Jean Young. Also survived by 17 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Tues. Oct. 7th at 9AM. Funeral mass in The Church of the Incarnation 425 Upham St. Melrose at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited.
