Ralph E. Giddings Jr., born on May 14, 1952, in Melrose, Massachusetts, passed away on September 5, 2026, at Melrose Wakefield Hospital. He was a lifelong Melrose resident whose presence brought warmth, laughter, and a steady sense of devotion to everyone who knew him. Ralph lived a life marked by  loyalty and a deep love for his family, and he will be remembered with great affection by all whose lives he touched. Ralph was the beloved son of the late Ralph and Dorothea Giddings. He was the devoted husband of 44 years to Loretta Giddings, and together they built a life filled with love, humor, and shared memories. He was a proud father to Jimmy Giddings and Melissa Giddings, and nothing mattered more to him than his family. He was also the loving brother of Paul Giddings and his wife Ann, as well as Jeanette Luti and her husband Richie. Ralph treasured his family deeply, and he carried that love with him in all that he did. 

Ralph attended Melrose High School and went on to serve his community through his work as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. He was known for his reliability, his friendly manner, and the care he showed in his daily work. Ralph took pride in doing his job well, and he formed lasting connections with the people along his route. His service as a Navy Disabled Vietnam Veteran was another source of pride in his life, reflecting his sense of duty and commitment to others. Ralph was a man of many interests and talents, and he embraced life with an adventurous spirit. He loved tent camping and found joy in the outdoors, especially while hunting in Woodstock, Vermont and fly fishing at the Malden Saugus Anglers Club in Saugus. He spent cherished summers with his family on Long Beach in Rockport, where many happy memories were made. Ralph was also a devoted fan of Boston sports, especially the Patriots, and he followed his favorite television show, Columbo, with enthusiasm. 

He enjoyed doing home repairs and took great pride in his house, which he affectionately called the castle. Those who knew Ralph will remember his colorful stories, his quick wit, and the way he could make people laugh. He was funny, adventurous, and handy, and he brought those qualities into every part of his life. He had nicknames for everyone he knew, a reflection of the personal and playful way he related to others. Ralph was also known for his love of animals. He loved all animals, cared for his family dogs Lucky and Sadie, and even enjoyed raising wild animals before releasing them back into the wild. 

His compassion for living creatures was one more example of the kindness that defined him. Above all, Ralph was a loving husband and father whose greatest joy came from being with the people he loved. He built a life centered on family, hard work, and simple pleasures, and he leaves behind a legacy of devotion and good humor. His memory will live on in the hearts of Loretta, Jimmy, Melissa, his siblings, extended family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Ralph E. Giddings Jr. will be remembered for his generous spirit, his love of life, and the many ways he made the world brighter for those around him.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster Street, Melrose. Interment will be private. Family & Friends respectfully invited to attend.
