Raymond W. Sherwood passed away at his home in Melrose on February 5, 2006, he was 87. Mr. Sherwood was born & raised in Danbury, CT graduated from Danbury High School and entered WWII after high school. Ray was a WWII Army Veteran from 1942 to 1945 and served in North Africa and Italy. Mr. Sherwood worked for the Transitron Company in Melrose for a many years and as a machinist for the W.W. DeHart Company in Woburn for several years. He was a dedicated member of St. Marys Church, where he sang in the choir, volunteered as an usher & Eucharistic Minister and as a senior acolyte at funeral masses for many years. He has been a resident of Melrose since 1944, was a member of the K of C in Melrose, the Melrose Bowling League and the VFW Harold OYoung Post #2394. Ray was active as a CYO baseball coach & a volunteer for the Boy Scouts Troop #617. Mr. Sherwood is survived by his wife of 61 years Rita I. (Dimock) Sherwood. Father of Donald J. Sherwood & his wife Mary of NH, Ralph W. Sherwood & his wife Emma of N. Reading and Janice M. Guerra & her husband Al of VA. Brother of David Sherwood, Bertha Bruey both of CT and the late Dorothy Howard. Also survived by his late grandson Scott Sherwood, 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Thurs. Feb. 9th at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Wed. 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
