Obituary

APPLEYARD, Richard Charles Passed away on August 22, 2026, surrounded by family. He was born on May 2, 1941, to William and Margaret (Butler) Appleyard of Malden. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (LaSpina) Appleyard; son, Stephen and his wife, Tracy; daughter, Jane Allen and her husband, Cory; son, David and his wife, Susan; grandchildren, Emily, Max, Hava, Horace, Maeve and Charlie; sister-in-law, Trudy LaSpina; brother-in-law, Bill LaSpina and his wife, Sue; brother, William Appleyard; and a wide circle of loving family and friends. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph Appleyard; and brother, Joseph Appleyard, S.J. Richard grew up in Malden.

He earned degrees from Boston College and the University of Massachusetts, before a lifelong career in the Malden Public Schools, first at the High School, where he taught English and served as the faculty yearbook advisor, and later at the Beebe school, where he taught English as a second language. In 1966, Richard married his childhood sweetheart, Elizabeth. Together, they raised four children and had many adventures, including camping, international travel, and taking their grandchildren on day trips in Boston. They also spent quieter days reading on the porch. They enjoyed nothing more than each other's company. Richard was an avid reader throughout his life. He was generous with his time and talent.

For many years, he participated in Project Bread's Walk for Hunger. Richard could build or fix anything, and was the first call for family when home repairs were needed. He was an expert pie maker, and in recent years studied watercolor painting. Services will be held at Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., MELROSE, on Saturday, September 12. Visitation will begin at 10am. At noon, we will have a Celebration of Richard's Life. During the celebration of life, those in attendance will be invited to share their memories of Richard. Donations in Richard's memory may be made to Bread of Life – Malden. Visiting Hours: 10am-12pm
