Richard L. Barber died at the Epoch Senior Care Center in Melrose, on March 25, 2006, he was 81. Richard was born in Medford, raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School.He served in the US Army during WWII, he lived in Melrose for 20 years, Rhode island for 25 years and moved back to Melrose a couple of months ago. Richard worked for the MBTA for over 35 years as a traffic checker, schedule maker and then as the Superintendent of Schedules the last several years of his career. Mr. Barber was a former member of the 1st Congregational Church in Melrose and the Kingston Congregational Church in Rhode Island. Richard was an avid train enthusiast & collector and enjoyed traveling all over the United States & Europe on trains. Mr. Barber was the husband of the late Doris (Cochrane) Barber. Father of Russell K. Barber & his wife Mary of Belfast, ME and Alice P. Barber of Melrose. Brother of Robert Barber of Danvers & the late Paul Barber. Brother-in-law of Helen Barber & Ruth Barber. Grandfather of Karin & Amy Barber. Great grandfather of Morgan & Madison. A funeral service will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday April 1st at 11AM. Relatives & friends invited. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
