Obituary

Richard A. "Dick" Hughes passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital, on November 10, 2015. He was 77 years of age. Richard was born in Brookline on April 15, 1938 to the late James & Catherine (Finn) Hughes. He was raised in Brookline, graduated from Brookline High School, Class of 1956 where he was the captain of the hockey & baseball teams and was a member of the golf team. While living in Brookline as a young man, Richard caddied at The Country Club in Brookline for many notables including Francis Ouimet. After high school, Richard joined the US Army and served his country with pride in the US Army & the US Army National Guard during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army in 1959, Mr. Hughes attended Boston University, graduated from BU in 1963 and married his wife Judy whom he met while at BU. Mr. Hughes was the president of Interfold Systems, a print paper company he has owned for the past 35 years. He lived in Melrose for 47 years and the past 5 years on Plum Island in Newbury. Dick has been a member of Bellevue Golf Club since 1975, where he served on the board and was on the tournament committee for several years. He had a great sense of humor, a passion for golf and was an avid student of the game. Richard enjoyed watching movies whether old or new, was a huge Boston sports fan, and was very proud of his Irish heritage. He enjoyed working around his Larchmont Rd. home on the second hole of Bellevue Golf Course in Melrose, either climbing a ladder to paint or working on the grounds. But most of all he adored his children and grandchildren, teaching his children Laura & Bryan to play golf or watching cartoons with his grandchildren Caroline, Sean & James. Richard was the Beloved husband of 52 years to Judith A. (Zarella) Hughes. Devoted father to Laura A. Hughes of Cambridge and Bryan R. Hughes & his wife Anna of Brookline. Cherished grandfather of Caroline, Sean & James. Loving brother of John David Hughes of Westwood, James Francis Hughes & his wife Bette of Brockton and Kathleen Coleman & her husband David of Brookline. He is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews & friends. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday November 13, 2015 from 4:00-8:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose on Saturday at 10:30AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial at Holyhood Cemetery in Brookline will be private.
