Obituary

Richard Letch of Melrose passed away peacefully in his home on June 21, 2023 at the age of 90.

Richard was the beloved husband of Joanne (Kennedy) Letch for 64 years. Devoted and loving father of Judy D'Alessio and her husband Charles of Reading, Richard Letch, Jr and his wife Karen of East Boston, the late Mark Letch, Paul Letch and his wife Lisa of Lynn, Kevin Letch and his wife Susan of Florida, Deb Grasso and her husband Rich of Danvers. Adoring grandfather of Matt and Kara D'Alessio and Stephanie Letch. Loving brother of Alan Letch and his wife Dianne of Florida, Ronald Letch of Neveda and Sharon Sindledecker and her husband Glenn of New Hampshire.

Richard was a 60 year resident of Melrose and enjoyed summers with his family at his seasonal home in Point Shirley, Winthrop. The bulk of his successful career in mechanical engineering was at United Shoe Machinery ("The Shoe") formerly located in Beverly. He was one of those few all around nice guys and would always have some funny comments or do silly things to give you a laugh.

As a devoted father, Richard took his children on different adventures and created various things or activities for their enjoyment. He involved himself in their activities in sports and Boy Scouts. He took his involvement to the next level by volunteering with organizations such as Melrose Youth Hockey, the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. In later years, he tutored students at the Melrose Horace Mann elementary school and became very committed to serving at the Incarnation Parish church. He started as an usher taking up the collections during the Mass. The priests then took notice of the special demeanor and humility Richard possessed. They asked him if he would have interest in becoming an Extraordinary Minister. Richard said yes and this very special privilege was bestowed upon him. The role brought him tremendous fulfillment.

Richard had terrific general carpentry skills that kept him busy with projects around both his homes and at the homes of his children. He developed a passion for and advanced his skill in woodworking to the point he was designing and building furniture pieces for his children and grandchildren.

Richard was a dedicated and attentive husband and father who was creative, caring, supportive and generous. His memory will live on with many.
