Dr. Richard J. Sorbera passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital on May 28, 2014 at the age of 81. He was born in Winthrop to the late Joseph & Josephine (Rizzo) Sorbera, raised in Revere, graduated from Revere High School, Boston College and Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1960. Dr. Sorbera did his post graduate training at Tufts School of Medicine and Dental Medicine, his internship in Oral Surgery at Boston City Hospital and was Senior Resident of Oral Surgery at Boston City Hospital from 1964-1965. He also served his country in the US Navy as a Lieutenant in the Dental Corps from 1960-1962. Dr. Richard was the president of Richard J. Sorbera, DDS & Shibly D. Malouf, DDS, Inc and was a clinical professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for over 40 years. He taught at Boston University for several years and was a member of the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Dental Association. A 45 year resident of Melrose, Dr. Sorbera enjoyed hiking, climbing and traveling throughout the United States National Parks, Europe, Egypt and to Barcelona, Spain to visit his daughter Dr. Lisa Ann Sorbera. His favorite hobby was the study of ancient civilizations. Dr. Richard was the beloved husband of 51 years to Lee (Martocchio) Sorbera. Loving father of Dr. Lisa Ann Sorbera of Spain. Cherished grandfather of Arianna & Nuria of Spain. Caring uncle of Helen Martocchio & Dr. Joseph Martocchio. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday, May 31st from 8:30AM-10:30AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St. Melrose at 11:00AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private.
