Obituary

Richard E. Sullivan passed away suddenly at work in Boston on September 22, 2015. He was 75 years of age. He was born in Medford to the late John Patrick Sullivan & Mary A. (Barry) Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1957. He was part of the 1956 Hockey Championship Team and was inducted into the Malden Catholic Hall of Fame. Richard continued his education at Newman Prep School Class of 1958 and then graduated from Boston University in 1962 where he played hockey and baseball. Richard was scouted by the Dodgers right out of BU but was sidelined by an injury. Mr. Sullivan started his sales career in educational books at the Perma Bound Company in California and then Harper & Rowe of New York City for many years. After moving back from California he lived in Lynnfield for 10 years and the past 35 years in Melrose. Mr. Sullivan was a huge Boston Sports fan and an advocate of sports in general. He never missed any of his grandchildren's sporting events and was very proud of all his grandchildren's accomplishments. Richard was a longtime member of Bellevue Golf Club in Melrose and was instrumental in helping build the junior swim team and tennis program. Richard also loved spending time at his home in West Yarmouth for the past 50 years. He was the former husband of the late Jean R. (Day) Sullivan. Father of Kristin Sullivan-Paton & her husband Scott Bartlett Paton of Cambridge and Nancy Sullivan of Newton. Grandfather of Eliza de la Vergne Paton, Myles Bartlett Paton and Honor Taylor Paton all of Cambridge and Griffin Edgar Sullivan of Newton. Brother of John Patrick Sullivan Jr. & his wife Janet C. Sullivan of Reading. Uncle of John Patrick Sullivan III. of Plympton. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Monday, Sept. 28th from 4:00-7:00PM. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home on Tuesday Morning Sept. 29th at 9:00AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church , Herbert St. Melrose at 10:00AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment at Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to Malden Catholic High School, 99 Crystal St. Malden, MA 02148.
