Rita M. Downey, who died on December 12, 2009, lived a rich life, full of family and friendsall of whom will miss her dearly. Rita grew up in Dorchester, in St. Ann's Parish. She lived most of her adult life in Melrose, where she helped shape the social fabric of the community through her passionate involvement with numerous organizations, including the League of Women Voters, the Melrose Planning Board and the Melrose Alliance Against Violence, of which she was a founding member. She was also an active member of the Incarnation Church. From her earliest days to her last, Rita was shaped by and reflected the faith of the Catholic Church. Rita graduated with the Class of 1953 from Monsignor Ryan High School in Dorchester and received a Bachelor's degree from Regis College in 1957. She earned a Master's in Social Work in 1973 from Salem State University. Dedicated to social justice and compassionate action, Rita volunteered as a domestic violence counselor for 17 years at Respond, Inc. in Somerville. Rita and her husband Paul enjoyed traveling and made numerous trips throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. In 2008, Rita and Paul celebrated 50 years of marriage in Hull, where Rita spent nearly every summer of her life. She loved spending time on Nantasket Beach and hosting family and friends (and her family's friends) on the expansive porch of her family's summer home overlooking Hull Bay and World's End. Rita was well loved for her spontaneous wit, sharp intelligence, radiant beauty and full heartwhich she shared generously with her husband, two brothers, six children, 12 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, extended family and an enviable group of dedicated friends, many of whom have known her for more than 50 years. Rita was the beloved wife of Paul L. Downey. Loving mother of Paul Downey Jr. of VA, Richard Downey & his wife Kathie of Melrose, Sarah Sutherland & her husband Robert of CO, Thomas Downey & his wife Stephanie of British Columbia, John Downey & his wife Wilma of FL and Susan Downey of Melrose. Caring sister of Thomas Welch of FL and the late Richard Welch & his wife Virginia of Hingham. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday Dec. 16th at 9AM. Funeral Mass in The Church of the Incarnation, 429 Upham St., at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited.
