Robert J. Azevedo Sr. entered into rest February 11, 2011 at the age of 70, surrounded by his four children. Mr. Azevedo was born in Cambridge on July 23, 1940 to the late Humberto & Rose (Fatado) Azevedo. He was raised in East Cambridge and graduated from Ringe Tech, Class of 1958. Robert was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving as a Military Police Officer from 1958 to 1962. He lived in Melrose from 1967 to 1994 and for the past 15 years in Danvers. Mr. Azevedo worked for New England Life Insurance Company before starting his own business, Robert J. Azevedo Insurance in Melrose, which he ran for over 20 years. After a successful career in the insurance and financial planning industry, Robert pursued a second act as a screen actor and stage performer, appearing in dozens of films and plays in the Newburyport and Cambridge areas for 15 years. He was a member of Bellevue Golf Club in Melrose for many years, coached and umpired little league for several years, enjoyed golfing, tennis and swimming. Mr. Azevedo was the beloved father to Lynn M. Shea & her husband Michael, Laura Azevedo & her husband Michael Hannon, all of Melrose, Michael R. Azevedo of Newburyport, and Robert J. Azevedo, Jr. & his wife Julie of Manchester, NH. Cherished grandfather of Matthew, Megan, Ryan and Michael Shea; Aimee, Luke, Danielle, and Leo Azevedo; and Oliver and Lucy Hannon. Former husband of Joan (Mahoney) Azevedo of Danvers & FL. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the VA National Cemetery in Bourne, MA. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend a "Celebration of His Life" at Bellevue Golf Club, 320 Porter St. Melrose, on Saturday, February 19, 2011. The Azevedo family will receive family & friends from 4:00-5:00PM with the celebration starting at 5PM followed by a dinner.
