Robert J. Collins passed away at his home in Melrose on November 2,2006, he was 84.
Robert was born in Boston, raised in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School. After high school, Mr. Collins entered the US Air Force where he became a fighter pilot during WWII and served with great distinction. Robert served in the European Theater, he was shot down four times but that didn't stop him, he went on to received the Air Medal with 4 Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After his discharge he worked for the New England Telephone Company for over 35 years, first as a test man and then instructor. Robert lived in Melrose for 30 years, Saugus for 20 years and was a member of the Melrose Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Collins was an avid golfer, a member of Meadow Brook Golf Club and then Bellevue Golf Club in Melrose for 10 years.
He was the devoted husband of 61 years to Mary M. (Gray) Collins. Beloved father of Brian R. Collins & his wife Shirley of ME, Barbara A. Whalen & her husband David of FL and Carolyn M. DeFreitas & her husband Phillip of Groton. Brother of Frances Mannix of Dorchester, Janet Baxter of Winthrop & the late Elsie King. Also survived by 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews.
WWII Army Air Corps Veteran. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Tues. Nov. 7th, at 10AM. Funeral Mass in The Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St. Melrose, at 11AM.
