Robert E. Hawkes passed away at the Meadow View in North Reading on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at the age of 71. Robert was born in Cambridge on July 8, 1939 to the late Harold A. & Leta J. (Bowen) Hawkes, was raised in Billerica and graduated from Somerville Trade School. Mr. Hawkes worked as a machinist for Custom Machine in Woburn for a few years, construction for Schofield Forms for several years and for the Belofram Corporation for 15 years. He lived in Melrose for a few years, Tewksbury for 46 years and the past 2 years back in Melrose. Robert enjoyed, camping, hunting, fishing, drawing & painting and was an avid reader. Mr. Hawkes was a diehard Patriots, Bruins, Celtics and Red Sox fan. He coached youth hockey in Tewksbury, umpired & coached little league and senior league baseball in Tewksbury and in his younger years he was a golden glove boxer. Robert was the beloved husband of Barbara J. (DeFazio) Hawkes. Loving father of Marlaine J. Hagopian & her husband Andrew of Reading, Robert E. Hawkes Jr. & his wife Kim of NH and Frank J. Hawkes & his wife Maria of AZ. Brother of Harold A. Hawkes of Tewksbury and the late Richard & William Hawkes and Gail Doran. Grandfather of Andrew, Sarah, Ryan, Richard, Maria, Alycia, Nicole, Zackary, Natasha, Kaye, Raphael & Brandon. Great grandfather of Ava, Kalen, Mikaela, Brady, Oscar, Micah, Jada & Ayla. Brother-in-law of Claire, Margarete, Carol, Linda, Janet & families. Also survived by numerous nieces & nephews. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Robert will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Wednesday, October 13th at 11AM. Relatives & friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours Wednesday morning from 9:00AM 11:00AM. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
