Robert Landrigan passed away peacefully at his home in Bedford on Friday, July 6, 2012. He was 85 years of age. Robert was born in Melrose on September 1, 1926 to the late Raymond & Elizabeth (O'Leary) Landrigan. He was raised in Melrose, graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1944, where he played on the football team, and from Boston College, Class of 1950. Mr. Landrigan served in the US Armed Forces for over 20 years. He joined the Navy in WWII as an Airman Cadet, then the Marines where he served as a fighter pilot during the Korean War. Robert was a reservist in both the Marine Corp. and the Air National Guard, from which he retired as a Captain and Squadron Leader.
Robert lived in Melrose until 1958 and Bedford for the past forty years. He worked as a systems engineer for the Mitre Corporation for 20 years. He loved thoroughbred racing, reading, playing the piano, the music of Gershwin, spending time on Cape Ann, and Patriots football. Robert also did volunteer work at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Landrigan was the beloved husband of Tilda (Finocchio) Landrigan of Concord, devoted father of Ellen Landrigan of Somerville, Thomas Landrigan & his wife Katie Carruth of Littleton, Betsy Janzen & her husband Peter of Melrose, Denise de Filippi & her husband Roland of Lexington, Christopher Landrigan & his wife Nicole Bernier of Lowell and the late Teresa Landrigan. Loving grandfather of Lucas, Charlie, Tyler, Reina, Robert & Hazel. Caring brother of Martha McGinley & her husband Joseph of NJ and the late Mary MacDougall. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Thursday, July 12th at 9AM, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose at 10AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Wednesday from 5:00-8:00PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
