Robert W. Murphy passed away at Beverly Hospital on December 19, 2007; he was 86 years of age. Bob was born in Boston, raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1941. Mr. Murphy entered the US Navy in June of 1942 and served until 1945. He was involved in many battles in the Pacific and Solomon Islands. Bob was a decorated Disabled American Veteran, receiving the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and a Presidential Salutation. He was a contributing author for the book Pearl Harbor West Lock Disaster. Mr. Murphy worked as a machinist at the Watertown Arsenal for 25 years, the Charlestown Navy Yard for 10 years and for the MBTA in Everett for 10 years, retiring in 1965. He was a member of the International Association of Machinist for 47 years, a member of the K of C, VFW Harold OYoung Post #2394 of Melrose, Melrose Fish & Game, Malden Moose and the German Club in Malden. Robert was a very generous person, volunteering at St. Marys Church in Melrose doing what ever job needed to be done and as an usher for over 50 years. A lifelong resident of Melrose, Bob was also a Boy Scout master for 10 years. Husband of the late Agnes F. (Haggerty) Murphy. Father of Robert T. Murphy formerly of Melrose and Marie A. Southern of Lynn. Grandfather of Benjamin Murphy of Melrose, Megan Murphy of NH, John Psota & Christina Psota both of NJ. Great grandfather of Zack, Bailey & Alysa. Brother of the Late Louise Phelan, Paul, Thomas, John & William Murphy. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday, Dec. 22nd at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Friday 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
