Robert P. O'Brien, of Melrose, died at home surrounded by family on March 5, 2010 at the age of 85. Bob was born & raised in Medford and graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1942 & North Shore Community College. Bob served as a Sergeant in the Army with the 18th Weather Squadron during the bombings of London in WWII. After returning from the war, Bob joined the Medford Police Department, where he served for 36 years and was respected by many before retiring in 1984 as a lieutenant. He was also a graduate from the FBI Academy, becoming the Police Prosecutor for the Somerville Court House and was the Past Director of the Medford Police Regional Training Academy. Bob resided in Medford for 23 years and the past 39 years in Melrose. He was a member of the Church of the Incarnation in Melrose where he was a Eucharistic Minister for many years and was also a former Sunday school teacher at the Immaculate Conception Church in Malden. Bob loved spending time playing tennis with his friends at the Winchester Tennis Club in Winchester and was an avid Boston sports fan. He was the beloved husband of Mary T. (Keane) O'Brien. Loving father of Robert A. O'Brien & his wife Corinne of Malden, James P. O'Brien & his wife Janet of Lynnfield, Maureen T. Riley & her husband Edward of Saugus, Patricia E. Hughes & her husband Daniel of Melrose, Timothy M. O'Brien of Melrose and the late William J. O'Brien & his wife Julie of Ipswich. Cherished grandfather of Amy, Keith, Mark, Kristin, Robby, Talene, Gabrielle, Douglas, Katelyn, Patrick, Julianne, William and Jaclyn. Also survived by 6 great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Devoted brother of the late Joseph O'Brien and his wife Dorothy of Tewksbury and the late Grace Birmingham & her late husband Thomas of Saugus. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Wednesday, March 10th at 8:45AM. Funeral Mass in the Church of the Incarnation 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 3-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bob's name to the Children's Hospital, P.O.
