Robert F. Umano passed away at his home in Melrose, on Tuesday, November 3, 2009. He was 75 years of age. Robert was born in Somerville on August 2, 1934 to the late Salvatore & Edith (Sordello) Umano, he was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School. Mr. Umano was a US Marine serving for 3 years in the Korean War. After the war Robert joined the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Local #103 in Boston and worked as a project manager for 41 years, 1st for the M.B. Foster Electric Company and then for the Massachusetts Electric Company, retiring in 1994. Mr. Umano has been a resident of Melrose for the past 45 years, was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church, the Knights of Columbus and was past president of EMARC. Robert enjoyed traveling, working with his hands, doing home improvement projects and loved to garden. Mr. Umnao was beloved husband of Merlene A. (Herbert) Umano. Loving father of Catherine Karelas & her husband Ernie of Melrose, Robert F. Umano Jr. & his wife Melissa of Wakefield, Ann Marie Roth & her husband Neil, Carolyn Umano all of Melrose & Richard Umano of Wilmington. Devoted grandfather of Christen, Peter, Angela & Nicholas. Loving brother of Celia Constantino of Melrose, Lucile Umano of Everett, Salvatore Umano Jr. of Plymouth, Jean Nugent of Newton, Gloria D'Angelis, Ann Medieros both of Everett, Mary Amerino of Medford and the late John Umano. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Sat. Nov. 7th at 9AM. A Mass of Christian Burial in Robert's name will be held at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Friday from 4:00-8:00PM.
