Obituary

Rosamond Arlene (West) Smith was born in Caribou, Maine on February 14, 1919 to Sylvester and Rose (Martin) West. The oldest of four children, she was the sister of Wilfred "John" West, William West and the late Richard West and Ruth West Bigart. It is certainly fitting that Rossie was everyone's favorite valentine. She entered eternal peace on January 3, 2010 wrapped in the love of family and friends. She never tired of giving to all those who entered her world, whether it was through her cooking, her sewing, or her wisdom. Her favorite place to be was in the midst of a gathering of family and friends. She was married 59 years to the late John A. Smith, Sr. and spent most of her married life living in Melrose before retiring to her dream home in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Thanks to her granddaughter Jenn she was able to live her final years independently in Jenn's home in Wakefield. She was the cherished mother of John A. Smith, Jr., Mary Lee and Bill Erndl, Linda and the late Bob Del Rossi, and Patrice and Jack O'Donnell. She was the beloved nana of Mike, Rita, Cathy, Tim, Dan, Dennis, Michelle, Joe and Chrissy Cronin, Mary Beth and Mike Nave, Scott and Kim Smith, Kim and Kurt Norris, Josh Nunes, Jenn Nunes and Nina Sim, and Matt and Molly O'Donnell. She was nana-nana to John, Joe, Valerie, Michaela, Sarah, Christopher, Sean, Michael, Madalyn, Tyler, Morgan, Rylee, Kyle, Alyssa, Connor, Emily, and Abigail Rosamond. She was nana-nana-nana to Evan. She was also the beloved Smitty to her "other" loving family, Arthur and Joan Telles, Judy and Bill Gray, Roberta Delorie, George and Valerie Telles and their children and grandchildren. Rossie is also survived by numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Rossie spent her life granting wishes for her family, so in lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, 1 Bullfinch Place 2nd Flr., Boston, MA 02114. Her wish was to celebrate her life and not mourn her death so please feel free to express your joy by wearing bright, happy colors. She would love that. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday Jan. 7th at 8:45AM. Funeral mass in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours on Wednesday from 4-8PM. Burial in VA National Cemetery in Bourne.
