Obituary

With deep sadness we say goodbye to Roselyn Frank, daughter of the late Philip and Anne Frankenstein, of Pittsburgh, PA. Roselyn passed away on January 30th, at The Residence at Riverbend in Ipswich, MA at the age of 83. Roselyn was a remarkable woman who led a life defined by a pursuit of learning and knowledge. She had an extraordinary appreciation for fine arts, travel and literature.

Roselyn began her career in elementary education. After working for four years as a 3rd grade teacher, she took a position at the University of Pittsburgh's Research and Development Center for Education, where she worked on the development of new and innovative ways of teaching reading. During her employment at Pitt, Roselyn earned a Master's degree in Special Education and Rehabilitation, with a major in Creativity and Giftedness. Roselyn later took a research position at Harvard, where she also tutored foreign students enrolled in the Harvard School of Public Health and assisted physicians in writing for publication. After leaving her research position at Harvard, Roselyn worked for 20 years at the Massachusetts Department of Education as an Education Specialist. During her time at the Mass Department of Education, she earned a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language at Boston University. After retiring from the Massachusetts Department of Education, Roselyn worked for 10 years at BU, teaching ESOL.

Roselyn possessed a profound love of travel, which she did both domestically and abroad. She deeply enjoyed attending theater and symphony orchestra performances. With a passion for singing and a strong appreciation for the voice as a complex instrument, Roselyn sought ongoing instruction to develop her vocal skills. Singing with groups such as Boston Landmark's One City Choir was an integral part of her life. She was also a skilled pianist. Roselyn loved all animals, but dogs always held a special place in her heart.

Roselyn served as a Volunteer Guide at the Boston Public Library, striving to provide unique, engaging, and at times customized weekly tours of the artistic and architectural aspects of the building. She appreciated the discretion afforded to the Volunteer Guides to create their own tours and was dedicated to doing independent and ongoing research, incorporating elements gleaned through deeper dives into a multitude of sources and making revisions to accommodate new information. Roselyn's investment in her role as a guide prompted her to travel to Guatemala in 2011 at the age of 72 to further improve her fluency after considering the prospect of offering a tour in Spanish.

Roselyn is survived by her sister, Debra Schmidt of Florida and niece Lauren Andrew and her partner, Dan Murwin, also of Florida, as well as Lauren's daughter, Taylor Andrew. A celebration of Roselyn's life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to aplacetobark.com
