Obituary

Roy Harold Layton of Melrose died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Brockton VA Hospital. He was 75 years old. Born on January 24, 1934 in Wakefield to the late Roy H. & S. Marion (Dodge) Layton, he was raised in Wakefield and a graduate of Wakefield High School where he was Class President and played football. He joined the Army after high school and served our country proudly in Germany. He later attended and graduated the East Coast Aeronautical School. Harry worked for 24 years at the General Electric of Lynn in non-destructive testing and had several managerial positions. He served as a postal supervisor and liaison between the GE and the government for which he received the "Top Contributor of the Year Award". He also worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Connecticut in their Development Aircraft Division. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wakefield in his younger years and the Tremont Temple of Boston and the Faith Evangelical Church of Melrose. Mr. Layton was a resident of Melrose for 50 years and enjoyed antiquing with wife Marilyn and daughter Jami and was known as "Mr. Fix-it". Roy was the devoted husband of Marilyn J. (Guile) Layton, with whom they shared 54 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Mark Layton & his wife Lisa of Medford, Lori Falter & her husband Don of BelAir, Maryland & Jami Hoyles of Melrose. Cherished grandfather of Kenny, Kory & Kevin Layton, Jessica & Brandon Keech, Rebecca & Matthew Falter & Robert Hoyles. Caring brother of the late John Layton and is survived by several nieces, nephews, relatives & friends. He was also loved by his 103 year old mother-in-law Nellie Harris of N.B. Canada. He will be loved & missed by all. A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 11th in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose with Military Honors at 11AM. Family & friends respectfully invited. Reverend Damaris Cami-Staples of the First Baptist Church of Melrose will officiate. Arrangements by The Gately Funeral Home of Melrose.
