Obituary

Russell J. Caruso, of Wakefield, passed away suddenly at home on January 8, 2025, at 77 years of age.

Russell was born in Somerville to Vincent & Ferney (Hutchings) Caruso. He was the beloved husband of Elaine M. (Nazzaro) Caruso. Loving father of Christopher Russell Caruso & his wife Amy of Auburn, NH, Jacqui Barnes & her husband Dennis of Pelham, NH, Jessica Caruso and Amy Perez & her husband Ricky of Biddeford, ME. Devoted grandfather of Malayna, Justin, Brandon, Arriella, Nick, Anthony, Devin and Gia. Cherished great grandfather of Cade, Colton and Braxton. Caring brother of Penny Barry of Dennisport, James Caruso & his wife Ruth of Holliston and the late Fred Caruso. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.

Russ had so many interests and hobbies, but his most favorite of all was to travel the world with his loving wife Elaine. Whether island hopping the tropics, shark diving in Polynesia, tours of Italy, Spain, Budapest, or the hallowed beaches of Normandy, they loved to experience what the world had to offer and cherished every moment exploring it together. When they weren't off on their more exotic travels, Russ would be trying to beat the quarter slots in Vegas, honing his cowboy skills in Tombstone, or relaxing at his new favorite spot, watching his stocks poolside at their vacation home in Punta Gorda.

Russ was fully committed to working out and a fixture at his local gym. Even if he was Injured or feeling ill, he would still power through any adversity he'd encounter. He was an avid sports fan and a gifted athlete who loved pickup games of basketball and hockey. In fact, he'd mostly compete with guys 20 or even 30 years his junior. He was strong, focused, and truly as tough as they come.

Another of his favorite pastimes, Russ loved to work side by side with his closest friends to support local veterans' charities, especially iPods for Wounded Veterans. He was so willing to help anyone in need, his generosity and kind heart are traits that will never be forgotten.

Above all his other hobbies, his true passion was music, singing, and writing songs and poems. He was incredibly talented and his gift with words will leave a legacy for all to treasure. He will be so greatly missed.

Russ worked incredibly hard to put himself through school and become a registered nurse. His specialty was psychiatric nursing and he enjoyed every minute of his 35-year career. His kindness, sympathy and devotion are just some of the traits which endeared him to his patients and coworkers.

Russell served his country honorably as a decorated Vietnam combat veteran and was an extremely proud member of the 1st Cavalry.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 10:30AM-12:30PM, followed by a service in the funeral home at 12:30PM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private.
