Obituary

Samuel J. Covino of Melrose died at his home on Saturday, October 31, 2009. He was 86 years old. Born on March 15, 1923 in Everett to the late Carmelo & Mary (Sellitto) Covino, he was raised in Everett and a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1941. After high school, Mr. Covino enlisted in the Army Air Corp and served our country proudly during WWII. He was a Technical Sergeant aboard a B-17 Bomber when it was shot down and he was a prisoner of war for 16 months in Germany. Sam received his Bachelor's Degree from Boston University in 1949 and then worked as an accountant with ABC Vending and Ogden Foods of Cambridge for over 20 years. He was a Melrose resident since 1975 and enjoyed his family, traveling with his wife, reading and crossword puzzles. Mr. Covino was the devoted husband of Marie L. (Cafasso) Covino, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Nancy M. Covino of Melrose, Samuel J. Covino, Jr. & his wife Ruth, also of Melrose & the late Susan M. Covino. Cherished grandfather of Christopher & James Covino, both of Melrose. Caring brother of Anne Goldenberg of Belmont, Robert Covino & his wife Janet of Rye, NH & the late Josephine Mutti, Agnes Commito & her husband Elio of Stoneham & the late Dr. Mario Covino & his wife Virginia of Winchester. Also survived by many nieces, nephews & cousins. Funeral Service in the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday, November 4th at 10AM. Family & friends respectfully invited. Deacon Frank Valeri, permanent deacon at Most Blessed Sacrament Church of Wakefield will officiate. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8PM. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett with Military Honors.
