Obituary

Sidney B. Abare passed away at the Chelsea Soldier's Home in Chelsea on Friday June 7, 2013. He was 90 years of age. Sidney was born in Brighton, NY to the late Louis & Nellie (LeBar) Abare, was raised in Paul Smiths, NY and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in NY. Mr. Abare entered the US Army after high school and served his country proudly during WWII from 1943 to 1946. Sidney worked for the Massachusetts Commission of the Blind as a proprietor of a canteen. He owned and operated the canteen for 28 years at the Chelsea Soldier's Home, retiring in 1985. Sidney and his late wife Phyllis lived in Everett for a few years, Saugus for a short time before moving to Malden in 1962 and spent 18 years wintering in South Pasadena, Florida. Mr. Abare spent this past year at the Chelsea Soldier's Home. He was a member of the American Legion, the Everett Elks, was a lifetime member of the Melrose Fish & Game Club and always enjoyed his trips back to New York to visit his family. Mr. Abare was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis E. (Winsor) Abare. Devoted father of Marie A. Abare of Malden, Patricia L. DiLiegro & her husband John of Revere, Paul L. Abare & his wife Mary of Melrose, Joan Farnsworth & her husband Harold of Malden and the late Ruth Merchant. Loving brother of Charlotte Bredlow of MD& Leona Latour of NY. Cherished grandfather of Freddie Callinan, Jill Palermo & her husband Adolfo, Julie Schmitt & her husband Ryan and Katie Abare. Proud great grandfather of Matthew & Grace Schmitt, Vincenzo & Charlotte Palermo, Mia & Luna Juarez, Eloise Farnsworth, Jenna, Bailey, Michael & Molly Merchant. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday, June 10th from 4:00-7:00PM. A Funeral Service will be held in the Maplewood Baptist Church, 729 Salem St. Malden on Tuesday June 11th at 10:30AM. Relatives & friends are invited to attend. Burial at Glenwood Cemetery in Everett. In lieu of flowers contributions in Sidney's name may be made to the Maplewood Baptist Church, 729 Salem St. Malden, MA 01248.
