It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Stephen Maté at the age of 78 on September 30, 2024, at his home in Woburn, MA.
Steve was born in Everett, MA to the late Margaret (nee Ready – P.E.I., Canada) and Alexander Maté (Hungary) on February 16, 1946. He was raised in Melrose. He was a 1964 graduate of Melrose High School. He was a Private First Class in the Army and served in the 45th Medical Battalion stationed in Germany during the Vietnam war.
Steve loved his job as a bus driver for M&L Transportation for over 20 years and retired in 2014. He was known for his work ethic, dedication and sense of humor.
Steve was a proud and adoring grandfather, cherishing every moment with his granddaughters especially his dinners with them at the 99. He was a true New England sports fan always watching his favorite teams, the Patriots, the Bruins and the Celtics.
Steve is survived by his son Jeffrey Maté and his wife Beverly of Melrose, MA, his granddaughters Haley Maté and Kira Maté of Melrose, his brother Albert Maté and his wife Maryanne of Billerica, MA, his sister Margaret Weaver and her husband Howard of Wakefield, MA and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly. Steve was predeceased by his brother Ernest Maté of Columbia, MD.
His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
Visiting hours will be held at Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St, Melrose, MA on Wednesday October 16, 2024, from 9-10am followed by a funeral service at 10am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA at 2pm.
