Teresa (McLaughlin) Laverty of Melrose, died at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital on Friday, February 29, 2008, at the age of 78. She was born on March 16, 1929 in Greenock, Scotland to the late George & Mary (Tate) McLaughlin. Mrs. Laverty & her family came to the United States on June 3, 1964 and lived in Cambridge for one year before settling in Melrose and living there for 42 years. Teresa worked for Trans a tron of Melrose for 3 years, the Visiting Nurse's Association of Melrose for 10 years and finally in the central supply and continuing care departments of the Melrose Wakefield Hospital for 20 years. Teresa enjoyed knitting, reading, drinking her afternoon tea with cookies, watching Mass on television and then saying the Rosary. She liked to "Mother" the whole world, socialize & talk, shop, dance with her husband and attend the Highland Games. She was a long time member of St. Mary's Church of Melrose, where she also belonged to the ladies Sodality. She was a member of the Irish American Club of Malden. She also volunteered with Bridge to help First Graders learn to read. Teresa was the devoted wife of 44 years to the late Daniel J. Laverty. She was the loving mother of Daniel J. Laverty & his wife Susan of Salem, NH, Anne F. Laverty, Paul C. Laverty & his wife Julia & Patricia R. Stevens & her husband David, all of Melrose & the late Matthew D. Laverty & his wife Jill of Decatur, IL. Cherished grandmother of Paul Christopher, Nicole E., Bridget C., Daniel J., Matthew V., & Sean P. Laverty. Caring sister of Anne Ferns of Vancouver, BC, James McLaughlin & Andrew McLaughlin, both of Greenock, Scotland & the late George & William McLaughlin. Also survived by many nieces, nephews & Molly & Maggie Stevens. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tues. March 4th at 9AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church Herbert St., Melrose at 10AM. Family & friends invited. Visiting hours Mon. 4-8PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
