Thomas L. Byrne, 86, died unexpectedly at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital Friday. Born and raised in Melrose,he was a life-long resident. He was a Sergeant in the 182nd Infantry Americal Division and saw action at Guadalcanal, Northern Solomon's and the Southern Philippines for which he received several Commendations and Citations including a Bronze Star. He was an active member of the Saugus VFW. Thomas was a laborer at several constructiion companiesand retired in 1989. He was the son of the late Thomas F. & Margaret ( McGonigle ) Byrne. Brother of James of Woburn, Joseph of Melrose, Gerald of FL, Barbara Galligan of FL, & the late Vincent & Charles Byrne, Irene McMenimen and Margaret Healey. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W Foster St, Melrose on Wed Oct 31 at 10 AM. Funeral Mass in the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St, Wakefield at 11 AM.
