Obituary

Thomas G. "O'B" O'Brien died December 8, 2011 at the South Shore Hospital surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. He was 80 years of age. Tom was born in Boston on December 11,1930 to the late John & Florence (Driscoll) O'Brien. He was raised in Charlestown and Malden, attended Malden Schools and entered the service just before graduating from high school. He later went on to receive his GED. Mr. O'Brien was a 21 year TSGT in the United States Air Force serving from December 1947 to August 1969. After his discharge from the Air Force he worked as a custodian for the Melrose School Department at the Coolidge School and Melrose High School for 15 years. Tom lived in Melrose from 1950 to 1990 before moving to Humarock where he spent his summers since 1958. He loved his life on the beach, listening to Irish music, was an avid gardener with a talent for growing flowers, a big Patriots fan but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family. Tom was a member of the VFW Harold O'Young Post # 2394 in Melrose, the AmVets and the DAV in Melrose. Beloved husband of 59 years to Barbara A. (Greelish) O'Brien. Loving father of Michael O'Brien & his wife Joyce, Colleen Hall & her husband Robert all of Melrose, Joseph O'Brien & his wife Hia of Mississippi and Barbara Blundell of Saugus. Cherished grandfather of Kerri-Ann, Sharon, Michael Jr., Toan, Jane, Joseph, Daniel, Nicole, Erica, Elizabeth and Devyn. Loving great grandfather of Trevor, Davianna, Felicia, Grace, Ciara, Peytan, Cole and Aiden. Brother of Marion Stickney of Humarock, Regina McGrath & her husband George of Petersham and the late Florence Ryle, John and Robert O'Brien. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Wednesday Dec. 14th at 9AM. A Mass of Christian Burial in remembrance of Tom will be held at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4:00-8:00PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family would greatly appreciate donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O.
