Walter J. Dolan, Jr. of Melrose died on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He was 85 years old. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on May 13, 1926, he was the son of the late Walter J. Sr. & Viola (Kaulback) Dolan. Walter was raised in Chelsea and a Chelsea High School Graduate. He served our country proudly in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War and then attended the Franklin Institute & Northeastern University before working at Pfeiffer Vacuum in New Hampshire, the Charles River Breeding Labs, the Museum of Science & Transitron as a Certified Plant Engineer. Mr. Dolan was a Melrose resident since 1954, enjoyed summering in York, Maine since 1969, was a lifetime member of the VFW Harold O'Young Post 2394, a member of St. Mary's Church of Melrose, the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's and ran the CYO Basketball & Little League for many years. He was a loyal friend, had a great sense of humor, was very generous, brought food to all his friends & family & loved to travel to Ireland, Switzerland & other European locations. He was an avid golfer, Celtics fan and loved to listen to old time radio. He was the husband of Jean M. (Carter) Henry Dolan of Melrose with whom he shared 20 years of marriage & the late Cathryn A. (Quinn) Dolan, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. Father of Walter J. Dolan, III & his wife Lorraine of Wakefield & Michael G. Dolan & his wife Judy, also of Wakefield. Step-father of Steven Henry & his wife Nicole of CA & Suzanne Lavoie & her husband Phillip. Grandfather of Joseph, Jeffrey, Gregory, Jennifer & Colleen Dolan, Olivia Henry & the late Ann Marie Dolan. Brother of Mary Smith of Reading & the late Eleanor Richards. Brother-in-law of Helene M. Quinn & Rita Q. Dietrich, both of Melrose. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces & grand nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday, May 4th at 10AM. Funeral Mass to celebrate Walter's life will be held in St. Mary's Church Herbert St. Melrose at 11AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours Thursday from 4-8PM.
