Walter J. O'Brien, of Saugus and formerly of Melrose, passed away surrounded by his family on March 26, 2015 at the age of 83. Walter was born on July 19, 1931 in Somerville, MA to Walter J. and Lillian M. (Potterton) O'Brien. He was raised in Everett and graduated from Everett High School. In 1950, Walter enlisted in the United States Navy where he honorably served for two years during the Korean War. Following his service he became an airline pilot and worked as a captain for Northeast Airlines for four years and then for Trans World Airlines for 28 years before retiring in 1985. Walter married his beloved wife Joann T. (Taracevicz) O'Brien and they raised their family in Melrose. Walter and Joann lived in Melrose for thirty years and were members of the Incarnation Church. Following their time in Melrose they moved to Saugus and spent another 16 years there by each other's side. Walter enjoyed vacationing with his family during the winter time at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire. Walter was very proud of his entire family and loved them all dearly. Walter is survived by his beloved Joan T. (Taracevicz) O'Brien of Saugus. He was the loving father of Maureen Picciotto and the late Saro of Saugus, and Susan Aristizabal and Gustavo of Saugus. Walter was the proud grandfather of Alexa, James, Isabella, and Katherine. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 31st at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose from 11AM-1PM. A Funeral Service will be held the same day at Gately Funeral Home at 1PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
