William M. Callanan, 75, died at Mariner Health at Longwood in Boston Tuesday afternoon after a brief illness. William was born and raised in Cambridge, he graduated from Rindge & Latin High School in 1943. He served in the U S Marine Corp and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima. William and his brother Charles owned and operated Roach's Sporting Goods Store in Cambridge for over 52 years and he retired in 2000. He was a member of St Mary's Church, the Cambridge Sports Union, the National Rifle Assoc., the Mass Rifle Sportsman Club, and with his wife was an avid square dancer with the Yankee Twirler's Dance Club. Bill was the husband of the late Clare M. (Kelley )Callanan. Father of Richard J. Callanan of Centerville and Robert W. Callanan of Melrose. Grandfather of Timothy, Ryan and Andrew Callanan of Centerville. Brother of Charles S. Callanan of Cambridge. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
