IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Joseph "Bill"
Doran
May 20, 1939 – August 12, 2023
William J. "Bill" Doran, of Boston, passed away suddenly on August 12, 2023, in the company of his loving husband of 25 years, Phillip "Phil" Veysey.
Bill grew up in Melrose, the youngest child of Michael and Hilda (White) Doran, and has lived in several towns, residing in Boston since 1997. He graduated from St. Columbkille High School in Brighton. He received his BA from Stonehill College, and several Masters degrees from Boston State College. He worked for 42 years in the Boston Public Schools, first as a teacher and then as a special education coordinator in various schools. For his last 3 years in BPS, he was assistant principal at the Paul A. Dever School in Dorchester.
In retirement Bill continued to be active. He loved traveling. He and his husband, Phil, took 15 cruises to many parts of the world, the longest of which was 38 days from Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand. They visited every continent except for Africa and Antarctica. Their last trip was to Lisbon, Portugal in late July.
Even after a serious accident in 2017 which confined him to a wheelchair, he retained his love of life and his sense of humor. He and Phil took courses through the OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) program at UMass Boston, regularly attended Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts, and numerous plays and other concerts. They liked to travel to New York or London to attend theater, especially musicals. He often said that he was busier in retirement than he had been working full time! He was an active member of St. Cecilia Parish in Boston.
Bill sang with the Dedham Choral Society for 15 years. He travelled with the chorus and sang in Vienna Austria, Prague Czech Republic, Budapest Hungary, Riga Latvia, Tallin Estonia, St. Petersburg Russia and several locations in Italy. The highlight in Italy was singing at a Sunday Mass on the High Altar in St. Peter's Basilica.
Bill was the loving brother of Elizabeth "Betty" Shea of Melrose and the late, Mary F. Goswell, Dorothy A. Mulcahy, Edward W. Doran, Marguerite D. McCarthy, Eleanor J. Costello, Lois Burgoff, Francis X Doran and Anne Doran . Also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews, family members and friends.
