Obituary

William T. "Bill" Finnegan passed away at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge on Monday May 5, 2014. He was 69 years of age. Bill was born in Medford, brought up in Somerville and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Cambridge, Class of 1962. Mr. Finnegan lived in Stoneham for 43 years and the past 2 years in Reading. He served his country with pride in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Bill started his career with the New England Telephone Company before becoming a Massachusetts State Trooper. He worked as a trooper for 4 years and then returned to the phone company where he worked for 30 years. After his retirement he went on to work as a Telecommunications Specialist at the Mitre Company for 9 years. Mr. Finnegan loved spending time in Florida and at his second home on White Horse Beach in Plymouth, which he purchased in 1979 after the blizzard of "78" devastated the area. Bill could do anything with his hands; carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and was known as "Mr. Fix It" to all his family and friends he helped throughout his life. He had a passion for the ocean, loved spending time on his lobster boat or on the beach in Plymouth, was an excellent golfer and a great cook. But most of all spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends was number one in his life. Bill was the beloved husband of Joyce M. (Lawless) Finnegan. Devoted father of Kristen M. Jadul & her husband Jeffrey of Reading and Brendan M. Finnegan & his wife Jennifer of Marblehead. Cherished grandfather of Emma, Caroline, Jack, Lily and Will. Loving brother of George Finnegan of Medford and the late Nancy Stronach. Also survived by several nieces, nephews & friends. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St. Melrose on Friday May 9th at 8:45AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St. Stoneham at 10AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00-8:00PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Bill's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org/donate.
