William M."Bill" Irwin, of Melrose, died at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Bradford, MA on May 11, 2018 at the age of 67. Bill was born & raised in Somerville and a graduate of Somerville High School, Class of 1969. He resided in Somerville until 1991 and Melrose for the past 21 years. Bill worked as a Mechanic for the MBTA for 30 years before his retirement at the age of 53. He was a member of the AFL-CIO Machinist Union in Boston, International Assoc. of Approved Basketball Officials and the Melrose YMCA, where Bill was a very active member. Bill umpired & refereed many baseball, basketball & field hockey games for the Greater Boston & Middlesex leagues and was an avid Boston sports fan. He loved cooking, boating, fishing, gardening and was very proud of his tomatoes & basil. Bill enjoyed spending his time with his family at their home in Bourne, MA and Monument Beach. He was a car enthusiast, could fix anything and loved Rock & Roll music. Bill loved animals especially his cats Buttons, Dusty, Baby Bear and Boo Boo. Bill was very proud of his girls and his family was the most important part of his life. He was the beloved husband of Marian R. (Rochon) Irwin for 32 years. Loving father of Emily C. Irwin and Laura E. Irwin, both of Melrose. Caring Brother of Constance M. Irwin & her husband Tak Chin of Somerville. Also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives & friends. Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tuesday, May 15th from 4-8PM. Procession from the Gately Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 16th at 8:45AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, 9 Herbert St., Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
