Obituary

William F. Bill Spencer passed away at home on December 12, 2005, he was 80 years old. Bill was born and raised in Saugus, graduated from Saugus High School, Class of 1943 and attended Dartmouth College. Mr. Spencer left Dartmouth to join the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After WWII Bill worked for General Electric as a methods planner for 20 years. He was very involved in the Saugus Community; he was on the Board of Assessors and helped reevaluate property values on Route 1, he was a member of the Saugus Rotary and was voted Rotary Man of the Year in 1988, he was instrumental in building new fields & coaching for many years in the Saugus Little League, he was a longtime member of St. Margarets Church in Saugus and a present member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Saugus. Mr. Spencer owned the Matthew M. Cox Real Estate Company on Franklin St. in Melrose and ran the company with his wife Ann for over 15 years. Bill was a member and served as a director on the Eastern Middlesex Board of Realtors Inc., he has been a resident of Melrose for over 25 years and wintered in Marco Island Florida for 16 years. Mr. Spencer was Past President of the Marco Island Condo Association and enjoyed golfing & traveling. Bill was the beloved husband of Marie A. Ann (Bourque) Sullivan Spencer. Father of Maria Freedberg & her husband Paul of Boxford, Debra Vitkosky & her husband William of Rowley and the late William F. Spencer Jr.. Brother of Mary G. Sullivan of Saugus and the late Richard J. & Dorothea A. Spencer. Stepfather of Dennis Sullivan & his wife Rosemary of Tewksbury, Diane Mahan & her husband Thomas of FL & Brian J. Sullivan of Melrose. Grandfather of Alexis, Amy, Sam, Michael, Tim, Jim & Billy. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Friday Dec. 16th at 9:30AM. Funeral Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church, 14 Summer St. Saugus, at 10:30AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Thurs. 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery Melrose. Please omit flowers.
